Happy 41st Founder’s Day to Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity, Inc. Today we honor a sacred legacy. Delta Phi Upsilon was created because Black gay men chose to claim themselves, choose one another, and build what the world had not built for them. A brotherhood rooted in vision, audacity, love, and the conviction to serve queer men of color. We are first because our founders had the courage to imagine something new. Today, on our 41st Founder’s Day we honor our founder, Trevor A. Charles, whose vision gave birth to Delta Phi Upsilon in 1985. He created more than a fraternity. He created a home for Gay men of color to lead, to serve, and to belong. At a time when traditional spaces often denied us access, he imagined a brotherhood rooted in authenticity, history, and purpose. Because of his vision, Delta Phi Upsilon stands today on the open motto “Service Without Expectation,” grounded in service, leadership, and connection. We honor our the visionary and every early member who joined him is seeing our potential before the world did. His legacy lives through every brother and member of D Phi U. World AIDS Day 2025 Today, we honor the lives, stories, and strength of those affected by HIV and AIDS. And this year, without any acknowledgement from the administration we’re reminded of something our community has always known: We survive because we rely on each other. We care for one another. We fight stigma together. We push for resources, visibility, and justice together. Our resilience has never come from institutions. It has come from organizers, caregivers, educators, activists, loved ones, and every person who continues to advocate, support, and show up. It has come from US! As we reflect today, let’s commit to staying informed, getting tested, supporting access to treatment, uplifting those living with HIV, and continuing the work toward an AIDS-free future. This month, we pause to honor and celebrate our Hispanic brothers and members, whose culture, history, and heritage are an essential part of who we are as a fraternity. Our story is made stronger, fuller, and more beautiful because of the voices and experiences of our Hispanic members. From September 15 to October 15, we celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of the Hispanic and Latinx community. Your traditions, your families, and your stories are woven into our bond. We see you, we honor you, and we celebrate you. As we continue the work to build a more inclusive fraternity that can hold the multitudes of who we are, we know that brotherhood is strongest when we recognize the beauty of our differences and the power of our unity. This month, we celebrate together — in rhythm, in culture, and in pride.
📣 Black Boy R.I.S.E. is more than a program name. It’s a call to action. It’s about creating space, real space, for Black men and boys to be seen, heard, and valued in their fullness. To grow into men who carry not just the weight of their struggle, but the power of their truth. This platform was built on love. On purpose. And most importantly, on solidarity. Because when one rises, we all rise. This is how movements are made. It’s how legacies are built. ❤️ Delta Honors Charlotte Champion: Health Awareness ❤️ We are proud to honor Johnny Wilson — a tireless advocate for HIV awareness, equity in healthcare, and the empowerment of the Black LGBTQ+ community. Diagnosed with HIV at just 13 years old, Johnny refused to let stigma define him. Instead, he turned his personal journey into a platform for education, advocacy, and change — beginning with the courageous act of disclosing his status to his high school peers as part of a science project. From his early volunteer work with RAIN (Regional AIDS Interfaith Network) to his leadership as Director of Outreach and now at Mecklenburg County Public Health, Johnny has reimagined how outreach and HIV services are delivered. He has developed culturally responsive programs, launched innovative livestreams for “taboo conversations,” and leveraged digital platforms to connect communities to care. Today, Johnny oversees Mecklenburg County’s Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) federal grant and leads HIV Linkage-to-Care programs, streamlining the path from diagnosis to treatment and helping people achieve undetectable viral loads faster than ever before. His leadership has garnered national recognition, including features in The Washington Post and The Big Cities Health Coalition, as well as the 2021 Heart of the Community Award. 🗳️ Delta Honors Charlotte Champion: Political Empowerment 🗳️ We are proud to honor Bishop Tonyia M. Rawls — a groundbreaking national faith leader, social justice activist, and fierce advocate for the political empowerment of marginalized communities. Founder of Unity Fellowship Church Charlotte and Sacred Souls United Church of Christ, Bishop Rawls has been a transformative voice in both faith and activism, becoming one of the first women bishops in Unity Fellowship’s history. She also founded and serves as Executive Director of the Freedom Center for Social Justice, where her leadership bridges the worlds of advocacy, policy, and community organizing. Born in Newark, NJ in 1958, Bishop Rawls’ early life was shaped by the civil rights era. Witnessing the aftermath of the Newark riots, she learned the importance of channeling anger into building and protecting one’s community — a principle that has guided her lifelong work. A Duke University alum, Bishop Rawls’ journey has been one of breaking barriers and creating pathways for others to rise. 🤝 Delta Honors Charlotte Champion: Ally 🤝 We are proud to honor Cameron Pruette. A committed advocate for justice whose allyship is rooted in the liberation of Black people and the dismantling of systemic oppression. As Executive Director of the Freedom Center for Social Justice in North Carolina, Cameron leads with a vision that centers racial equity and LGBTQ+ liberation, ensuring that the most marginalized — especially Black and Brown communities — are not just included, but prioritized. A fierce believer in solidarity, Cameron has dedicated his career to advancing community-driven strategies that break down barriers and create space for every person to thrive. His work is a powerful reminder that true allyship requires action, accountability, and an unwavering commitment to justice. 🎭 Delta Honors Charlotte Champion: History & Heritage 🎭 We are proud to honor Jermaine Nakia Lee — a celebrated songwriter, playwright, stage director, producer, arts educator, culture agent, and community advocate whose work bridges the power of storytelling with the preservation of Black history and culture. His acclaimed musicals FOR THE LOVE OF HARLEM and A WALK IN MY SHOES have enjoyed sold-out audiences, critical praise, and national tours, cementing his place as a transformative voice in American theatre. As Education & Outreach Director for Brand New Sheriff Productions — Charlotte’s only African American repertory theatre — Jermaine is shaping the next generation of artists and audiences. A Kennedy Center–trained and certified Master Teaching Artist, Jermaine has brought his expertise to every major museum and arts institution in the region. He is also a trailblazing advocate, co-founding Charlotte Black Pride, SC Black Pride, and Triangle Black Pride, and leading initiatives like POOR NO MORE, which provides essential resources to Charlotte residents, and KUUMBA Academy, a fellowship for creatives of color in the region. Donté Prayer — a passionate advocate for healthcare, human rights, and social justice whose leadership and service extend far beyond city limits. A native of Greenville, NC, now based in Charlotte, Donté serves as HIV Program Manager at The Center for Black Health & Equity, leading national strategies in HIV prevention, health equity, and harm reduction. He is also the visionary founder of R.O.L.E. Models, an innovative initiative blending fashion, cultural arts, and public health to mentor and empower youth in marginalized communities. His dedication reaches across the country through work with the CDC, the White House Office of National AIDS Policy, the HIV Prevention Trials Network, and numerous local and national boards and initiatives. From championing HBCU excellence to mentoring the next generation of leaders, Donté’s impact reflects his deep belief in equity, inclusion, and lifting as we climb. ✨ Delta Honors Charlotte Champion: Education ✨ We are proud to recognize Earl C. Martin Jr., MSW, LCSW — licensed clinical therapist, podcaster, and curator of healing — but above all, a human committed to helping others live their best lives. As the owner of Innate Virtue Counseling, PLLC and creator of 26 Affirmations for Boys of Color, Earl specializes in addressing anxiety, intimate partner violence, and boundary setting. His work centers the intersections of LGBTQIA+ identities, minority and racial stress, and trauma — creating space for both healing and empowerment. Earl is a proud graduate of Winthrop University, where he earned his Master of Social Work and B.A. in Psychology, focusing his studies on empowerment, racial inequities, microaggressions, and the experiences of LGBTQIA+ youth.
